Janice, inversion tables are good, but I think specific disc-flexion/distraction techniques may be better for you. There are likely many chiropractors in your area who practice such techniques. Where are you based?
While surgery may be a scary option indeed, and it may be your last option, it also may be your only option other than possible success with disc-flexion/distraction. If that doesn't bring you the results you are looking for, surgery is not the end of your world, and may give you great results. I have met people who have had great results after such surgeries, though admittedly as a chiropractor I've also met people who didn't have great results. I'd really hope yours goes well, but I'd look into the chiro options first.
