Early NC and early NH did not address emotions very much, dealing more with the physical aspects of life. Experiencing emotions fully, in the now, is a relatively new concept to NH, a sort of "east meets west," if you will. The basic tenets of NH have not changed, but they have been expanded upon. Through insight, we've gained vocabulary and descriptive terminology to better define the substances, forces, influences, and conditions required in order for us to thrive.
I do not refer to modern hygiene and 811 as if they were synonymous. 811 is based upon hygienic principles. The dulling effect of cooked carbs creates a barrier between you and your emotions. The greater the digestive effort, the greater the barrier. Mind numbing substances such as alcohol, tobacco, various drugs, and a wide variety of foods will also result in bolstering the wall separating you from your emotions.
