Subject:         Dr. D, knee pain and exercise.

Hi Dr. D,

811 here for quite a few yrs now, but frequency of exercise has been up
and down over the years.

Just started martial arts a few months ago and loving it, but my knees are
experiencing constant pain. No aching or pain when sitting, standing, laying
around or normal walking, but I feel it when I walk up and down stairs for
example, or if I bend too much at the knees ala squats. Once I'm warmed
up the pain usually goes away and comes back after cool down.

There is a lot of knee bending in the forms we do and I am trying to learn to
do them correctly so as not to aggravate the problem. I think that because
I was weak to begin with, I was using my joints to hold me up and not my
quads and hamstrings, and maybe that is causing the constant issue.

Do you think this kind of pain is a warning sign to stop this activity or is it ok
to work out through it as I am building strength and learning better posture
and stances? As I age will martial arts cause irreparable damage to my
knees?

I am a 40 yr old woman with good flexibility and no prior major knee
problems or injuries except typical runner knees pain here and there.
