The relationship is probably quite simply that consuming a volume of
food in a given meal that is beyond our stomach's capacity will result
in poor digestion, hence the constipation.

That has certainly been my own personal experience. I am all too
familiar with skipping meals and trying to make up for it in one meal
at the end of the day (due to lack of planning and/or lack of time to
eat on my job). It is generally uncomfortable trying to fit 2-3 meals
worth of food in my stomach at once, and I find that when doing so
my bowels are tough to pass and less frequent (which could also
simply be caused by not eating frequently---eating generally
stimulates the bowels to move/pass).
