That's a good idea. For greater effectiveness, you
could hook your 2 gallon containers over an old broom
handle or similar, and place it on your shoulders. A
barbell should never sit on your neck bones, nor
should any weight. sit the bar across your trapezius
muscle.

Holding a weight at chest height would also increase
strength and help correct form.

Your strength will improve rapidly with weights.
However, for further gains you will in time require
more weight added.

Squatting 70+ times with no weight is a more cardio
exercise. Adding more reps will not increase
strength. There is always opportunity for building
functional strength with bodyweight only; eg stair
climbing, hill climbing, tree climbing!

Jump squats are a worthwhile addition that will get
you fitter; Just as it sounds, squat to about 90
degrees at the knee, and take off powerfully.

Try u-tube for additional exercises and
demonstrations.
