Holding a barbell in the squat is less comfortable,
but all part of the challenge. It improves posture
and is the most effective way to gain leg strength.

One other way you could build without holding weight
is the gym leg press machine.

For more power, and strength to a degree, you could
perform plyometric jump squats and jump lunges.
