Chris Kendall turned me on to noni in Pohoa, HI. last april. i have not
been able to find a whole lot of info on to "pick" noni and how to eat
them. here are a few things i picked up while i was in Hawaii.

the best time to eat is the moment it falls off the trees, nonis go bad
very quickly after falling off the tree naturally. DO NOT eat a them off
the ground if you do not know how long it has been on the ground.
this is something i saw alot of people doing, no wonder why nonis
have such a bad repution for being unpalatable, people keep eating
rotten ones! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4n9OqE2-rIs the best
way avoiding picking up rotten noni this is to throw away any that
have been on the ground for a unknown amount of time, as they have
almost certainly gone bad. next, visit the tree every day, any new nonis
on the ground will be fresh and ready to eat that day. the rest you do
not eat should be moved away from tree to avoid them getting mixed
up with the next days harvest.

eating a noni is similar to eating a guava. The black hard seeds in noni
are numerous and are unavoidable. the most efficient way to eat a
noni is to mash the flesh in your mouth without biting or grinding
down on the hard seeds and then swallowing the flesh along with the
seeds. my favorite part of the noni is the core, which is pure flesh with
no seeds.

noni is a acidic savory fruit so it combines well with tomatoes,
avocodos, and pineapple. they sometimes give me the prickly
sensation in the mouth like what happens when one eat a pineapple.

this pic is of a Barb Cuttance's noni salsa made with avocado, noni,
tomato, and lime. combine in a bowl and mash. next time i might add
some pineapple and cilantro too.

fun fact: there is not nutritional information about fresh noni on the
internet.

what is the plural of noni any way? nonii? or just noni?
