Sharon - To repeat myself: you don’t need a license
to voice an opinion on an issue. This is called the
freedom of speech, and we should be very thankful
that we have it.

“The first human who hurled an insult instead of a
stone was the founder of civilization”. - Sigmund

There is great truth in this quote. Censorship does
more harm than good. And free speech is meant to
protect unpopular speech. There is a value in
people sharing their honest thoughts and feelings
with us, even if it is something that we don’t like.
Because, if they never say that, and just keep it
inside and think it, then you never have a chance to
consider that it might have some validity, or to
refute it. If no homophobe ever came out and said
something along the lines of “I think gays are
inferior”, then there would be no way to address
their homophobic behavior. On all of these issues,
someone is wrong. Unpopular positions ought to be
vocalized, because there remains a chance that they
might wind up to be right in the end. History is
rife with examples of this. And, if they’re wrong,
but if they’re not allowed to state their stance,
they can never have their misconception corrected.

“Ignorant free speech often works against the
speaker. That is one of several reasons why it must
be given rein instead of suppressed.” - Anna
