Subject:         Dr D - question on 811 and cooked starches

Hello Dr Doug,

I have a question regarding adding some cooked starches (potatoes, gluten-free grains) in small quantities in the evening. I ate fully raw, 811 for a year, however then due to budget issues and traveling started to include some cooked starches, having fruit during the day, a big salad in the evening and some cooked starch with steamed vegetables (no oil, no salt, plain, combined).

I noticed that I have gained some weight, even though I hardly eat any fat and don't eat salt, keep myself very active and don't eat a huge amount of calories, like some other people in this movement do. I can't say that I didn't have any weight issues even on a 100% 811 raw vegan diet, but it was more manageable.

I see many promoters in this movement eating low-fat cooked food now and endless amounts of calories and being really slim.

Do cooked starches affect some people more than others? Is it possible to gain weight if I eat just some cooked starch, without overeating on it? Have you come across similar experiences to mine?
