I have an annual physical later this month and I am dreading it, but not for the reasons most people dread it. I am 53 and I have been a whole food vegan for 16 years, have been dairy free for over twenty years and 80/10/10 for over a year. I work out every day. At my last check-up, my doctor commented that I was the healthiest patient he had and he couldn't believe my cholesterol and blood pressure numbers. So after he complements me on how healthy I am he starts the hard sell on all of the expensive procedures. "You need a mammogram." "You need a colonoscopy." ...and so on. I explain to him that I argued with my doctors all through my 40's on why I didn't need a mammogram and in the end the research now backs me up that women in their 40's don't need them. If I was ever tempted to do a colonoscopy, last year's article in The Atlantic on people getting PTSD after waking during them has convinced me that it is not a procedure I will agree to, especially when I have no risk factors for colon cancer. I guess I'm starting to answer my own question - I need to find a doctor who is more supportive of my life style and health choices. How do you deal with traditional doctors.
