If you can't lift the weight 10x it is too heavy for max hypertrophy, though you will get some hypertrophy. If you can lift it 20x or more, hypertrophy will be quite limited as well.

Another way of achieving the same end is by doing one rep, but very slowly, for 20-30 seconds, using the same weight guidelines as above, but counting seconds instead of reps.
