Are you certain that "poop like a dog" meant no paper?
Perhaps it meant that they squat rather than sit?
Or perhaps it meant that they clean themselves in some way other than using paper. (A dog typically is far more flexible than a human in terms of reaching, and being willing to lick, specific parts of its anatomy.)
Maybe it was a reference to frequency, volume, choice of location (outdoors as opposed to indoors?)
Do you have context to demonstrate the meaning?
You began this thread with, "I often hear it said." You cite something you read from Robert Cohen, and some unnamed "plant based" athlete.

I wouldn't be worrying about this non-issue. :)
