Dear Dr Graham,

I've been eating a lot of romaine lettuce recently and noticed lots of tiny (quite sharp) spikes running along the back of the spine/stem of the lettuce leaves.

Would these spikes be harmful for someone like me with a sensitive digestive system? Might it be better to cut away the spine/stems or would I be losing a lot of nutrition?

Also, I was wondering do primates eat the entire leaves or tear away the spine/stem (for some reason I think I've seen a video where they did this)?

Many thanks, DJ
