Even though it's an animal living in nature doesn't
necessarily mean it eats it's optimal diet. Looking at
our history shows we've been eating lots of weird
stuff in the past because we had no choice. Perhaps
the bonobos don't have much choice either?

I like to imagine that if bonobos were given only
fruits and vegetables (in abundance) in a controlled
natural evironment for, say, a hundred years (not
enough to change their physiology but enough to have
children who has children), and then given the option
to kill and eat animals, none would do so.

Who knows! Very interesting things to think about, and
I hope you find more answers!
