If you consume no added salt, you spare sodium well. If you eat salt, your body is better at losing excess sodium. That range allows for about 10-15 gram difference in overall salt intake without it killing you.
An ounce of salt will kill the average person who doesn't eat salt. It could take as much as two ounces of salt to kill a person who eats salt every day.
