Hi!

I had pain in my knee as well while running. Might not be the same
type, and it seems your pain is triggered a lot easier than mine, but
here's my story anyway.

All my life, whenever I ran, I got the pain after a little while. After
changing my running style to natural, barefoot style running and
avoiding hard surfaces (minimalist shoes or vibram fivefingers) I
have seen a big improvement since each landing has much less
impact on the knees.

However, this style of running requires your muscles to be able to
take the impact instead of your joints etc, and that means you need
to build your muscles in the feet and legs. If you dont have enough
muscles, the impact will still affect the knees. Start slow and dont
run long at all.

After starting to run like this I had to run for shorter distances and
build it slowly, however I still experienced pain. But, after about 6
months of bicycle touring a very steep island (La Palma, Canarias)
almost without running, my pain is virtually gone. Now I can run
without pain! I think all the cycling helped me build up sufficient
muscles around the knee without straining the knee too much in
the process.

I suggest you experiment and educate yourself on natural barefoot
low impact running (landing on the forefoot rather than heel), and
focus maybe 2/3 on cycling and 1/3 on running, while
simultaniously building muscles by doing specific strenght
exercises for the legs!

Of course, dont force anything, if something hurts, it means STOP,
and rest until it doesnt hurt anymore. You have to be very patient
and take it as slow as the body demands!
