I ascribe to the idea that denying breast milk to a child who wishes to breast feed is counterproductive to the child's health. The concept known as child-led weaning develops from this point. Some children wean very early, before reaching their first year. Others are not ready to wean for many years. Historically, children were commonly breast fed for 5-10 years. Our daughter began weaning at one year of age. She finished the process a few weeks after turning eight.
