The simple answer is that greens and fruit carry the same nutrients, but in different concentrations.
You would have to eat roughly 40 heads of lettuce per day for a sedentary woman to meet her calorie requirements. I can't imagine doing that intentionally, or enjoying it. An active man would need to double that.
