The formula for weight loss is simple: eat fewer calories than you use, and you will lose. Eat more than you need to maintain, and you will gain.

The body doesn't change its metabolic rate, nor does it try to hold fat.

Raising heart rate is a good idea, at least once or twice per day, yes.
