I've never before heard that particular advice as a remedy for low B12. A lot of B12 is manufactured in the gut, so perhaps the doctor feels that by eating more vegetables the gut flora will be healthier, and thus produce more B12. I don't really know for sure, this is just my guess.
If you supplement with sublingual B12 tablets for a week or two and your boys feel or act magnificently better, then that is telling. If they don't, the B12 wasn't needed, but no harm has been done.
