No matter who does it, 12 miles is not easy.

When you are suffering from overtraining and burn out, there is no point to taking a few days off and then going back to doing what you were doing before. You'll just overtrain again.

After sufficient rest, come back gradually. Build up from really short mileage to relatively longer mileage. Take month, or more, to build up to the levels where you were training before. You had obviously overdone it the last time, and needed more preparation to be able to handle the heavy mileage. Give your body time to adapt.
