Most bites aren't serious, and most serious snakes prefer their privacy, and are nocturnal. You'd really have to be unlucky to get bitten.
The variety of malaria that affects your brain is serious business, and I can't speak from experience since I don't know of anyone that has chosen fasting for this variety. I do know folks that took the drugs and did fine. I don't think I'd take drugs for the other types...
