Fresh juicy fruits are always preferable to dried fruits. Dates can fall somewhere in the middle, depending upon the date. If you overeat on sweet fruit, beyond your calorie requirements, there is always a price to pay. A meal of dates is small and rich. Dates are relatively easy to eat beyond your requirements. If you suspect dates to be problematic for you, avoid them, or eat them sparingly. If they are not a specific problem that you are aware of, enjoy them when fresher options are not available.
