All fitness programs result in better performance at the specific aspects of fitness that they stress or challenge. If you wish to get better at the skills or talents required to perform Insanity, P90X, or any of the other, by all means do those programs. If you wish to get better at tennis, by all means practice tennis. Fitness can be broken into five main categories: muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardio, flexibility, and neurological skills. All fitness activities include at least some degree of each of the five, but the proportions are different. I don't find one activity good and another bad, instead I find one activity good for certain things and another activity good for other things.
Essentially, what aspects of your fitness do you wish to improve upon? If P90X will get you there, and you enjoy the program, then go for it. If not, then do something else.
