I believe this depends to some degree on the specific tattoo artist, and the techniques, tools, inks, and dyes used. There is always risk of infection when the skin is compromised. As for long-term risks, it is difficult to say for certain. I do not believe there are any long-term benefits associated with tattoos, however.
