| | Subject: | Torn ligaments in foot: To have surgery or not? | |
Date: | January 13, 2013 at 6:35 pm PST |
Howdy folks, About eight months ago, I tore a few ligaments in my foot. I am able to walk normally again, though the foot is still weak, somewhat loose, and the foot slouches inward in a bit (from the ligaments being overstretched). I have sprained this same foot previously a handful of times, just within the last half- dozen years. Since my last injury eight months ago, I have been doing a good job avoiding running and being careful not to re-injure it. My podiatrist has recommended surgery to repair the overstretched ligaments (which will not go back to their original size on their own), though he is not pressuring me, and says it is my decision. The doc says the surgery would reduce my symptoms by 50-60%. To judge whether that is worth anything might partially depend on whether you look at it "glass half full" or "half empty". What attracts me to surgery is the hope of having a stronger foot and being able to run again (I used to do half-marathons, but without surgery, I would be better staying away from this sport for life, since my foot will be so vulnerable.) Things that do not appeal to me about the surgery are having to be off my feet about for eight weeks or so, and to expect at least twelve weeks before healing, as well as the various drugs I might have to take while undergoing surgery, and afterward (pain). (How toxic would it be to take some anesthetics, and minimal pain relievers if really needed?) I need to make this decision about whether or not to have the surgery, and I warmly welcome your opinions, from a natural health, 811LFRV, perspective. If you need anymore information about anything regarding my predicament, feel free to ask me!
