Depending upon your age, your reliance upon your shoulder (do you make a living as a professional baseball pitcher, for example, or is great shoulder function simply convenient for you) and the degree of tear, you might end up considering rotator cuff surgery. Did any of the doctors mention surgery as an option? 9-18 months is a reasonable healing period. You'll likely benefit from doing as much strengthening of your shoulder as possible in order to stabilize the joint and allow other muscles to make up for the injured one to the degree that they can.
