If one comes from a reasonably good nutritional and health background, and eats 811rv with sufficient greens (your primary source of folic acid) then supplementation is not necessary or beneficial. But even if you do so, supplementation is not harmful, and some say can be beneficial, especially during the first three months of pregnancy. After that, supplementation is apparently useless, as the development it is said to affect has long since transpired.
