Most certainly, bananas and apples could become your staples throughout the winter. Here in the UK I've found oranges by the case to be quite inexpensive, while agreeing that grapefruit can be pricey.

Cabbage most definitely is a wonderful veg, by all means enjoy it. I use a lot of celery too, and cucumbers.
