Subject:         Getting enought omega 3 fatty acids and do I need DHA supplements?
Date: October 8, 2012 at 11:37 am PST

I am confused and concerned about getting enough omega 3 fatty acids on 811. I love raw food and I don't want to have to take supplements but since my small stroke in 2007 I am really trying to keep ahead of the game on brain health. Dr. Joel Fuhrman recommends that raw vegans supplement with DHA as he feels that they don't get enough in the their diet and he points out that many of his older vegan patients exhibit cognitive decline without adequate levels of DHA. Dr. Graham could you explain to me why we don't need supplements? I noticed that one vegetarian website said that the fatty acids ALA can be converted in the body to the fatty acid EPA if needed and that the fatty acid EPA can be changed into the fatty acid DHA if needed, so why would we need to supplement?
Thanks in advance!
