Other great apes (i.e. chimps) use primarily fat for fuel (up to 60%). Their intestinal flora produces short chain fatty acids from the abundant fiber. Their metabolism is likely not different to that of humans, as chimps, for example, are genetically very close to humans.

Anyway, our ancestors did not possess nutrient databases and software to keep track of their macro nutrient ratios. They likely ate as much fat as they could get (and also the fiber would have contributed a lot of fat for fuel).
