I agree with all of that, 100%, and have taught the same to Faychesca, of course. There are many local ponds where we feed the ducks a mix of various seeds and whole grains, and they love it. For instance, at the local wildlife center, they sell a mix specifically for wild fowl, which we use to feed the ducks everywhere, at the four or five other ponds we frequent, except at the one pond mentioned in the story. Those ducks have been habituated to bread, and won't eat the seed. We tried, repeatedly. Sorry, the birds are fed by the local people, and have been for many generations of ducks, and they prefer our bread to almost everything else. Essentially, these domesticated ducks won't make it without our help. They no longer migrate. Whether it is sad or glorious is up to your perspective, but it is what it is. If Faye is to feed those ducks, and that is the closest pond to our house, she has to feed them bread. Partly, this has helped her to learn firsthand the addictive quality of bread without her having to eat it herself.
