Subject:         HELP!! B12 and Iron deficiency.
Date: September 22, 2012 at 12:41 pm PST

I have been a raw vegan now for about 6 months. I nearly fainted one day about
a month ago and so I went to the doctor to get my levels checked. I have been
feeling like my eyes sometimes can't focus, I get really weak on certain days
(especially if I don't eat ALOT of greens) and sometimes my arm or hand will go
numb for no reason.
My doctor told me I'm extremely deficient in my B12 and that I'm slightly anemic.
I was never B12 deficient before. And although my iron has always been low, it's
never been this low. I used to eat a peskitarian diet for about 6 years and felt
fine for a long time. I always check my levels every year, even though I usually
don't follow modern medicine's approach to illnesses. My doctor encouraged me
to go back to eating seafood or to take B12, iron and vitamin D and calcium
supplements (since I live in Canada). I KNOW fish isn't good for me and I also
KNOW supplements aren't good for me. I would LOVE to have a natural, vegan
solution to my problem. I've been following the 80/10/10 diet quite closely.
Been jogging 4 times a week, stretching, dancing everyday, and I've also been
eating large quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Please HELP! I don't know if these levels are based on people who eat meat, if it's
okay to be a little lower. But I know that I DO become faint, have trouble
focusing and my arm/hand gets numb for no reason and these are ALL signs of
deficiency. Also, when i got sick a month and a half ago, it lasted over one
month in duration. NOT NORMAL!!!
I know the low fat raw vegan diet is the way. It's the only thing that makes sense
to me, but I'm having problems I need to solve.
I'm wondering if the climate I'm in has something to do with it. Without sufficient
Vitamin D in the winter, plus fruit that has been shipped so far, picked too early,
maybe I should wait to move to warm country before I become 100% raw vegan?
Dr Graham, I could REALLY use your advice right now.
