According to theory, homo erectus, the ancestor homo species to the modern homo sapiens, left africa and spead to asia and europe. This was many hundred thousands of years ago. So, homo erectus spread to regions of the world where he only could have subsisted on cooked food. Cooking food makes one pretty much independent of the environment food-wise. Ad the other question: The more resources a species can utilise the broader the niche, that it can take up. It is also called "survival of the fittest". And the conquest of new environments call for new adaptations (e.g. hunting), evolution.
