Hi Mary, as Doug says, the condition normally develops
from physical repetitive stress to the area. It would
not just come out of the blue, for no reason.

Whatever has changed in your exercise/footwear
regime,I will just put in that I am a huge fan of
orthotics - the shaped insole devices that fit inside
you shoes. They cured my plantar fascitis, low back
pain, knee and neck pain also. In mainstream
medicine, you would be offered only steroid
injections.

As a short-term help, the condition is almost
invariably connected with tight calf muscles. To
stretch the calf, stand with one foot on a platform
(eg a stair), the other foot fully on the step. Press
you heel down as far as you can, the muscle should
burn. Hold 30 secs each leg. Repeat on the affected
leg at least twice daily. Pressing down firmly is
better than bouncing the heel.

Hope this helps.
