Actually, it is the density of the food that is the problem. The more dense the food, the less full your stomach is, and thus the more you need to restrict in order to maintain weight. If you don't restrict (as you shouldn't, restricting food intake is neurotic and unhealthy) but consume too much nuts and seeds, avocados or coconut you will inevitably gain weight. The other pathological "solution" is to overexercise. Most "fit and healthy" people in our society do one or the other, or both in order to maintain their "fit and healthy" look.

So it is true that fat has more calories per gram, but that is only a problem in respect to the whole package (the nut or seed), which is not only high in fat per calorie, but also high in fat in terms of volume. This just means that the water content is low, which is why I will not eat any raw nuts or seeds sold in health food stores. They are dry and hard, which means they are no longer whole foods. Calling such nuts and seeds whole foods is like calling dried dates, bananas or cherries whole foods. When you reduce the amount of water in the food, it is no longer a whole food.

The taste is also concentrated and the combination of high caloric density and concentrated flavor leads to overeating.

It might be handy when you are hiking all day, for example, but if you are carrying water with you why not just carry the whole food and carry that much less water?
