For all around development, it is important to vary the training periodically. If you just want to get better at one thing, keep doing the one thing.
If you train beyond your ability to recover, (known as "over-training") then you open yourself to injury and illness, and will note that performance will either level off or actually tail off. Should this happen, increase recovery periods substantially until you see improvements in performance return.
