Subject:         Cramps in marathons--potassium sodium imbalance?
Date: June 24, 2012 at 10:23 am PST

Is this true, that by consuming a lot of bananas and not enough sodium, a
distance runner can get horrible muscle cramps?

Happened to my husband yesterday and trying to understand why. His diet
is 80% bananas and whole wheat pasta. Doesn't eat vegetables, so very
likely low on sodium. The other foods he eats are sheep cheese, oranges,
strawberries, and sometimes beans and rice.

He has run 10 marathons in the past 2 years and a 50 miler. Endurance is
great, no injuries. Loving the carb diet. But on a few marathons he has had
awful cramps that force him to walk. The cramps are in the thigh muscles
and move to the groin, he only feels it when he is running.
