You definitely should be used to any diet before you experiment before a race! My husband and I are athletes on a whole foods low fat, fruit and starch diet. It rocks. He did 12 marathons and a 50 miler in 2 years, people call him crazy for doing so much but he recovers quickly and has never had issues. There is never any bonking on a carb diet. Why would you carbo load for a race, and not for daily training? Exactly. Of course that's nothing on Tim Van Orden and Michael Arnstein. 811 elite runners who win races regularly.
