What did the color of the watermelon rind look like?

If there is a white or tan patch on one side and dark green on the opposite side. The melon is ripe and ready.

If the color is dark green all around without a tan patch then it was close to being ripe.

What you don't want is a light colored watermelon as those are too old and are like mush on the inside.

Basically, if I can get that dark color and tan patch then I just go for weight and if you knock on the melon lightly with your fist you should hear a very solid resonance. If there is a lighter sound to the melon then it is not as solid or dense inside.

If you purchased some watermelon already and don't like the taste then I would just compost it. Why eat something that you don't like? :)

Hope that helps.
