Part of the issue is why is the spleen enlarged.
Part of the issue is what type of food program your husband currently follows, and other aspects of his lifestyle.
If there is room to clean up his lifestyle, and time to make such changes, certainly doing so would be the logical first step. If he is in a situation where surgery is to be immediate, he doesn't have much time to see what healthful living could do for him, in terms of allowing his body to heal itself.

Can he wait a week or two before submitting to surgery?
