The bone reinforcement will only occur, or at least will only primarily occur, in the bones subjected to load. If you use machines to load arms or legs, but not spine, the spine will not benefit.
If you use free weights, especially if you stand when using the weights, your spine is much more fully involved in the weight-bearing.
