Hi Jesse,

From the Perfect Health Program, Dr. Graham says, "The best time to eat is immediately following physical activity . . . . If I was gonna set up a lifestyle pattern for people, I would say that, regardless of the number of times per day that they eat, it would be essentially a pattern that goes . . . physical activity followed by food followed by periods of physical inactivity or rest . . . three hours, four hours, five hours until the next period of physical activity would come about and then more food."

For me, grazing all day long does not support my desire to be physically active. Digestion takes energy; digestion and physical exertion are not a good combination -- the body does one or the other, not both. Or, as Professor Rozalind Graham so eloquently put it in Raw Nutritional Science Part One, "Your body is designed to undertake and maintain various different processes simultaneously all day and all night long. But when it comes to BIG things -- digesting a complex meal, conducting an intense emotion, performing intense athletic performance -- . . . it's only really capable of focusing on one thing at a time."

I just finished reading Nutrition and Physical Performance, and therein Dr. Graham says,
"Rest after meals to foster optimum digestion."

He also talks about meals for athletes, saying that "Athletes who need to consume over 4000 calories a day may find that three meals per day are insufficient, and they may wish to add an extra meal."

Dr. Graham responded to a similar question by saying, "My recommendations for athletes eating large quantities of calories is to eat more meals. I have worked with many athletes that eat 5 or even 6 times per day, when their calorie intake warranted such behavior. None of them graze . . . ."

I hope some of this helps, Jesse. I'm sure, with practice, you'll find what works best for you. :)

P.S. I know you said you've read The 80-10-10 Diet, but I thought I'd add a couple quotes from it as well. :)

"One tactic to achieve more bites, and to support our caloric needs, is to start with several fruit meals a day, approximately four. . . . Over time, depending on your exercise program and other healthful habits, you will be able to reduce this number of meals down to three and the possibly even two." p.157

Also, "You are not following 80/10/10 if . . . [y]ou eat all day long rather than one to four meals a day." p. 240
