Hi Mark, I don't know that I NEED more or less than before as I used to drink lots of caffeine and "burn the candle at both ends." I used to ignore my need for sleep and just do whatever it took to keep going. Now that I do not use any stimulants I am better in tune with when I feel tired or not. So, yes, I sleep more than I did before, but that is because I am ALLOWING myself to sleep when I am tired instead of making myself stay up late and then get up very early. Of course, life gets in the way sometimes and I have to work very late into the night and then set the alarm to be back in the office very early the next morning. But, I certainly feel the effects of this right away without the aid of caffeine (which, I have not consumed in almost two years), and so I garner EXTRA sleep/rest as soon as I can after the "crunch time" is over. On average (meaning when I don't have extra stress to recover from, such as illness, very intense exercise, excess workload, etc.), my body seems to like about 9 hours (it wakes up naturally at around 9 hours). During the work week I get closer to 8 most nights and wake up to an alarm. Less than 8 and my body is NOT happy. Not sure if this is the info you were looking for, Mark. If you are recovering from an illness you may wish to aim for 10+ hours of sleep plus rest throughout the day.
