Hi Heather,

Wow, I feel for you. Reading, watching, and listening to lots of Dr. Graham's and Rozi's materials, as well as undergoing one-on-one coaching with Dr. Graham has helped me immensely in this regard.

Something that I just heard Rozi say, is this:

"[T]he more that we don't eat the way we want to, the more we beat ourselves up. And, the more we beat ouselves up, the lower our self-esteem and the worse the pain, so the more analgesic we need. And, it just goes 'round and 'round and 'round. Partly where we need to break [the cycle] is by saying, "Even if [I] eat things [I] don't intend to, [I] do not allow [my] self-respect to drop; [I] do not allow [my] self-esteem to go down . . . I have just experienced using a coping mechanism as a human being." That's all you do. . . . And then you pick yourself up, you dust yourself off, and you say, "Okay, let's deal now with trying to remove this pain so it doesn't happen again in a few minutes, or in an hour, or in a week." (Raw Nutritional Science, Part 1).

She also says (in the same lecture) that, "When you go off the raw food diet, providing you are giving yourself the nutrients you need, if you still have challenges, it's not your physiology needing nutrients, it's because you don't feel sufficiently numbed out [like you're used to on cooked or high fat food]. That's the problem." Then she went on to talk about how we can mix up how we feel after eating a meal of fruit (like we have loads of energy and could dance around and complete this or that project) with hunger, because we've always equated fullness with heaviness and sedation. Anyway, that's the gist of it.

Basically, the big emphasis was on how vital it is to address our emotions if we expect to succeed on the raw food diet: "[T]he degree to which you are able to maintain . . . a low fat raw vegan diet . . . is absolutely parallel to the degree with which you are able to process your emotions -- both those you've been suppressing from the past and those that currently arise for you." (RNS, Part 1).

I do hope this helps you, Heather. Please take gentle care of YOU, okay?
