Your GF is correct. Teeth don't have a blood supply and are not subject to the same calcium losses from acidosis. They remineralize based on the state of the saliva mostly. Which is dependent upon the state of the diet. But also, having sugar on the teeth does promote an acidic environment which bacteria thrive on, and also the teeth themselves will lose minerals from them leeching out due to high acid content on them.

If you look at people who throw up their food after they eat (bulimia) they have lots of stomach acid making contact w/ teeth. This in turn degrades the teeth, and one of the signs of bulimia is (among other things) the poor tooth health from all that acid.
Acid can also occur from food itself (citrus fruits, etc that are in constant contact w/ teeth can be harmful if one snacks on them or fails to brush or rinse often), or from the bacteria that will grow on the sugar if it is not cleared away.

It's not just enough to eat well for healthy teeth in my opinion. But that is a good start.
