I was in your exact shoes not long ago and nearly gave up running for good. Now I train nearly twice as long and have shaved off over five minutes from my best 5K time in 8 weeks of regular training. What I've learnt: 1. Let your injuries heal thoroughly before continuing. Do something else is the meantime. 2. Adjust your running form to mitigate stress on joints. The 'Chi' style of running is working for me. 3. Proper Pre/Post stretching is essential. For me, I needed extra focus on my IT bands. 4. Get fitted for the proper shoes for you gait. 5. Run on softer surfaces. Concrete side walks are the worst. Seek out wood chip, packed dirt, and grass paths. Best of luck.
