The author "proves" that the map is wrong by demonstrating that we taste salt on the tip of the tongue. When I was in school, I learned a different map than the one the author quotes, which disproves his theory that the map is incorrect. I learned we sense sweet, primarily, on the tip of the tongue, sour on the sides, and bitter to the rear. Say the word sour, or think of a sour fruit, and you will feel the sensation on the sides of your tongue, not the tip. We gag on bitter foods, on the back of our tongue. The map works. As for salty tastes, I learned that ALL taste buds are sensitive to salt.
