Jenna,
Your doctor works for you. The doctor-patient relationship is just that - a relationship. Each party has responsibilities, but ultimately the physician's role is serve the patient.
If you have accurately represented what this physician said to you, then I recommend you find a new doctor.
Their behavior was unprofessional behavior and most importantly this is not someone who respects you or your beliefs. It is certainly appropriate for a physician to tell you if they disagree with a choice(s) that you have made, but it should be done with respect.
When shopping for a new physician ask for an initial consult and tell them who you are and in what you believe. If they have concerns, okay, feel free to ask them about their education and expertise with regards to nutrition and fitness.
You might be happier with a D.O. as opposed to an M.D., however there are certainly capable and professional M.D.s.
At the end of the day if you don't trust your physician, then you won't likely have a good and fruitful relationship with them.
You are the one paying the insurance premiums, co-pay, co-insurance, and that which insurance doesn't cover. Don't be afraid to stand up for yourself.
Good luck to you.
Chris
