Dear Dr. Graham, over 10 years ago while a meat eater I began having chest pain (I was in my 30's). The doctor discovered that I had a very low ferritin level most likely due to heavy menstrual cycles; he said that if I didn't supplement I would have a heart attack. So about 5 years ago I became a vegan, and two years ago cut out most oils, sugars and wheat trying to improve overall health. I also did two 12 day water fasts over three months. During that time I did not have a period. Now I am greatly improved, no pain, much less blood loss but still heavier than normal. Before becoming a healthier vegan my ferritin was averaging 5 without supplementation. After the three months of no period it was still only 11. I know my poor food combining must disrupt proper absorption but I am wondering if there is something else I can eat besides the greens to bring up my levels. Is there one particular green that is better? I've heard that black strap molassess is good but I don't tolerate cane sugar anymore. I did try the 80/10/10 diet for a week and plan on going back on it this week, so I am hopeful that this will improve things. Do you have any other suggestions? Also, do we need to add in overt fats up to the 10% percent limit to keep our brain/emotional health stable? Thanks in advance!
